Row over Mowden Hall school fees

Posted by The Journal on Sep 30, 09 09:32 AM in School news

Bosses at a leading North East private school have come under fire for putting up pupils' fees to cover a teachers' pay rise... and then freezing staff salaries.

Parents who send their children to the exclusive Mowden Hall Preparatory School, near Stocksfield, have just seen their annual fees go up by almost 2.8% for the new academic year.

Earlier this year they received a letter saying the increase was necessary because almost 70% of the school's costs are in staff salaries, and the Government had awarded teachers a 2.3% pay rise for 2009/10.

Tynedale lose out by a point

Posted by The Journal on Sep 28, 09 08:54 AM in Sport

Tynedale lost out by a point at Sedgeley Park, tries from Sepp Visser, Jake White and Joe Graham not enough to steal the spoils.

Gavin Beasley's two conversions and one penalty came up short in the event, with the home side landing three penalty goals to add to their own two converted scores.

While John Shotton and Tom Borthwick will not have been happy with the defeat, they will at least have taken solace in the losing bonus point.

People living in a tiny Northumberland village are to band together to fight a third proposal for an opencast mine on their doorstep.

The Journal has previously reported how UK Coal is to submit a planning application to mine two million tonnes of coal at Whittonstall, between the villages of Ebchester and Stocksfield.

Now the company has submitted a scoping report to Northumberland County Council ahead of its application for the site, which would be called Hoodsclose.

The county suffers more fork lift-related fatalities per head of its population than anywhere else in the country, according to statistics from the Fork Lift Truck Association.

The Berwick area was home to the most per capita deaths from fork lift truck accidents between 2001 and 2008.

The Town were fired in front by David Atkinson. Stocksfield levelled when Wayne Stewart scored from a chance set up by Phil Murray.

Iain Downie restored Cramlington's lead with a header from Graham Hogg's corner kick, but Andrew Carr slotted in a third goal for the hosts after racing on to Jordan Watson's through ball.

With only three minutes left, Stocksfield seemed to be down and out - but they were rescued by a late brace from Phil Murray.
